WHAT IS CODEPENDENCY?

Codependency is a dysfunctional relationship pattern in which one person – the codependent – puts another person’s needs ahead of their own. Codependent people excessively crave validation from others and will do almost anything to gain their approval – even if it means enabling addiction and other unhealthy behavior.

A codependent relationship can take many forms. In the context of addiction, a codependent person may fully commit themselves to catering to their partner who is struggling with a substance use disorder (e.g. by providing financial and emotional support). Choosing unhealthy relationship partners suffering from sex addiction can also be symptomatic.  The addict is often highly dependent on the codependent, which makes the codependent person feel needed and validated, creating a false sense of love and intimacy. This can lead to deeply dysfunctional and one-sided relationships.

COMMON SIGNS THAT YOU MAY NEED CODEPENDENCY THERAPY

Codependency isn’t always easy to recognise. In many cases, people with codependency happily prioritise the needs of family members without realising that their unconditional support is harming both themselves and their loved ones.

You may wish to consider seeking codependency therapy if you experience the following symptoms:

  • Low self-esteem
  • Strong desire to please people
  • Struggle to set healthy boundaries
  • Poor communication skills
  • Issues with intimacy
  • Obsessions with other people’s issues
  • Tolerate abuse and/or unfulfilling relationships

CODEPENDENCY ADDICTION RECOVERY PROGRAMS & RETREATS

As one of the leading codependency retreats in Thailand, we take a highly personalized approach to treatment that aims to address your unique needs as an individual. Our codependency treatment programs draw on a variety of evidence-based therapy methods, including:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy: CBT is a psychosocial intervention that is used for a wide range of health conditions. During codependency addiction recovery, you’ll gain valuable insight into how negative thought patterns fuel codependent behavior and learn effective coping mechanisms to deal with interpersonal challenges.
  • 12 steps treatment: Based on treatment models often used for alcohol and substance abuse, our bespoke 12 step treatment program offers an effective and structured pathway to recovery from codependency.

Our codependency recovery programs are designed to bring balance to your overall health and wellbeing. You’ll leave our codependency retreat with the schematics for building a balanced, independent and rewarding life.

How is Codependency treated?

Codependency is typically treated with talk-based therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy and 12 steps treatment. During treatment, people with codependency learn a range of valuable skills and coping mechanisms, including the ability to recognise problematic behaviour, set reasonable boundaries and develop healthier relationships.

What causes Codependency?

Codependency is a learned behaviour. For many people, it stems from childhood experiences in dysfunctional family systems. For example, a child who is forced to take on the role of caregiver for a parent who is unable to take care of themselves, or a child who is continuously blamed for the family’s dysfunction, may develop codependent traits later in life.

What are the signs of a codependent person?

Someone who is codependent may exhibit the following signs:

  • Feel responsible for other people’s problems
  • Go out of their way to please people
  • Allow or enable unhealthy behavior
  • Put others’ needs ahead of their own
  • Struggle to set reasonable boundaries
  • Have an excessive fear of rejection
  • Feel unhappy when alone

What are the negative effects of Codependency?

Codependency can adversely affect both people in a relationship. For the caretaker, they may neglect their own needs in order to take care of their loved one, which can result in low self-esteem, depression and a wide range of other physical and mental issues. For the person being cared for, codependency can – directly or indirectly – enable their unhealthy behavior. Codependency rehabilitation centers offer effective treatment options.

Can Codependents become narcissists?

Codependent people aren’t necessarily at risk of developing into narcissists. While most narcissists can be classified as codependent, the inverse isn’t true – most codependents are not exploitative or unempathetic, which means they are not considered narcissistic.

Is Codependency a mental illness?

No. Codependency is considered a behavioural condition and is sometimes referred to as relationship addiction.

How can I help my loved one?

At The Diamond Rehab Thailand we are experts in getting your loved ones into treatment. To start you can show your loved one our website and they will probably soon take an interest in our treatment center. If need be, we also can arrange an intervention at your home done by a professional interventionist arranged by The Diamond Rehab Thailand.

What is the process of rehabilitation?

The process may differ, as programs are customised based on what the patient needs as well as the severity of the addiction or mental illness, but the goal of rehabilitation is always to ensure the individual’s well-being. Most treatment programs include: evaluation, detox or the clearing of alcohol and other drugs out of your system, psychological treatments, education sessions, and supportive services. When you transition into outpatient therapy, you may still have one-on-one or group therapy sessions and to some patients, these may last for the rest of their lives.

Is Thailand a safe place for rehab?

Thailand is one of the safest countries in the World. Thailand has also one of the best medical care systems in the World with excellent private hospitals.

How long will it take?

This depends on the situation. E.g. does the client need a detox? Is addiction the main problem or are the underlying issues more concerning? It is important that the client finish what he/she signed up for. Overall, we advise that 6 -8 weeks in treatment is average and gives the client a good foundation to start a new life at home with the proper aftercare.
